Salvatore “Sal” Vitale lived a life defined by the things that mattered most to him—family, hard work, loyalty, and time spent with the people he loved. He passed away after 83 years well lived, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, generosity, and unwavering love.
Being a father to four children was not always easy. Sal could be strict, but as his children grew older, they came to understand that every rule, every lecture, and every expectation came from a place of love. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, often balancing his position with the Social Security Administration along with additional jobs to ensure they had everything they needed. If something in the house needed to be built, fixed, or renovated, Sal tackled it himself. There was no project too big when it came to taking care of those he loved.
While he cherished being a father, his favorite title was Pop-Pop. His eight grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. He was their biggest fan, attending games, recitals, school events, and celebrations whenever he could. He loved taking them on outings, spoiling them whenever possible, babysitting them when they were young, and never missed an opportunity to support and encourage them.
Sal met the love of his life, the late Barbara Vitale, when they were both in seventh grade while growing up in the Swampoodle section of Philadelphia. Although they knew each other as children, their love story truly began after Sal returned home from serving in the United States Army. By chance, he ran into Barbara at a local neighborhood bar, and from that moment on they were rarely apart. Together for more than fifty years, they built a life filled with love, raised four children, and were blessed with eight grandchildren. Their marriage was a testament to faithfulness, friendship, and enduring love.
Later in life, Sal and Barbara traded Maple Shade for Brigantine, where he embraced shore life. Whether he was out on his boat, casting a line, or finding another project to keep himself busy, Sal was happiest when he had something to do. Sundays, however, were reserved for cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles. And while he enjoyed many things in life, one favorite never changed—sharing pizza and a glass of wine with family and friends.
Sal was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara; his parents, Frank and Joanna Vitale; and his sisters, Kathleen and Loretta.
He is survived by his children, Salvatore (Angela) Vitale Jr., Robert (Carla) Vitale, Victoria (Steven) Rizzo, and Nicole (Joseph) Cleary; his cherished grandchildren, Santino, Nicolas, Salvatore, Angelina, Nina, Joey, Brenden, and Noelle; his brothers, Frankie and Johnny; the Schafer family; and many loving relatives and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate 83 remarkable years of life on Wednesday, July 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a 12:00 p.m. service at Mark C. Tilghman Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Our Lady Perpetual Help Parish, 236 E Main St, Maple Shade, NJ 08052.
