Bertha Mae Bernath (nee Cottman), 97, of Maple Shade, NJ, passed away peacefully at her home on July
21, 2022.
 
She was 97 yrs of age, born on October 11, 1924 in Merchantville NJ. Bertha lived a long and beautiful
life. She grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and graduated from Frankford High School in 1943. As a
child, Bertha was a member of the Girl Scouts and when she graduated high school she volunteered for
the USO during World War II, visiting injured sailors at the Naval hospital and attending the USO dances.
She enjoyed bowling, ice and roller skating, gardening, reading, and watching a variety of television
shows including her favorite soap operas and even the Eagles football games every Sunday. Bertha
worked as a typist for the Budd Company in Philadelphia during WWII and also spent time working at an
automobile insurance company on Broad Street in Philadelphia.
 
Bertha was the beloved wife of the late Robert Rees Bernath and was blessed with four wonderful
children, Wayne (Peggy) Bernath, Bruce (Donna) Bernath, Nancy (Craig) Silverman, and Carol (Joseph)
Kingsmore. She is the cherished Grandmother of 10 grandchildren, Jessica, Alana (Henry), Heather
(Steve), Matthew (Tara), Brett (Ashleigh), Joseph (Nicole), Whitney, Ashleigh (Christopher), Emily, and the
late Derek & Melissa (late wife of Matthew) and adoring Great-Grandmother of 18, Abigail, Zoey,
Anthony, Nathan, Kailey, Lexus, Brooklyn, Charlie, Lilly, Bailey, Alessandra, Teagyn, Lennox, Easton,
Giselle, Emery, Penelope, & Madilyn.
 
Bertha was an amazing mother who loved her children and all of her grandchildren/great grandchildren.
Bertha enjoyed spending time with her family and decorating for the holidays. Bertha was a caring,
loving and devoted parent who was proud of the work ethic and strong character of all of her children.
Bertha was a mom, grandmom, nan, nanny, and all around a special person for her family to have in their
lives.
 
Bertha was the daughter of the late Florence (nee Jones) Cottman Knoppel & Jesse Cottman, Step
daughter of the late William Knoppel, Sister of the late Albert Cottman & wife Mary, Niece of the late
Evelyn & George Gaunt, Niece & god daughter of the late Bertha & William Cottman, Cousin of the late
William Cottman, Jr., good neighbor of the late Janet & George Raynor, the Hornickel and Morning
family’s and best friend of the late Ann Urban.
 
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing and visitation with her family on Saturday, July 30,
9am-11am at the Mark C Tilghman Funeral Home, 38 N. Forklanding Rd Maple Shade NJ. Bertha’s
funeral service will follow at 11am at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at the Lakeview
Memorial Park in Cinnaminson. Memorial contributions can be made to Samaritan Hospice,
