Benita Ann (Blackson) Alexander was born on September 16, 1959, in Kittery, Maine, under the sun sign of Virgo and the moon sign of Pisces.
She was the beloved first daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Blackson and Sirletta Fordelma (Belcher) Blackson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxie Stevens Alexander, in 2020.
Benita carried a lifelong love of learning and an enduring intellectual curiosity. She graduated from Bordentown Regional High School in 1977 and continued her education at Saint John University, Rutgers University, and Burlington County College, where she earned various degrees.
That curiosity and dedication shaped a rich and varied professional journey. Benita became a certified paralegal, spent two decades as an Information Technology project manager in New Jersey and New York City, and most recently served as a Verbatim Hearing Reporter for the Social Security Administration in the Philadelphia area.
Throughout her life and work, Benita sought to improve the delivery of social programs and services in her community. She was guided by a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around her.
In 2014, that compassion inspired her to create the Hopelines Homeless Relief Fund, established to help non-chronically homeless and near-homeless residents of New York City meet basic needs such as rent, utilities, laundry and cleaning services, housing support, and transportation. Most recently, Benita served as a board member for the Isaiah 2318 Project, a nonprofit organization supporting widowed individuals with food, clothing, and emotional support in Camden NJ.
Benita was also drawn to beauty, mystery, and spiritual reflection. She nurtured a deeply introspective spirit, and that calling led her to attend the International Metaphysical Ministry University Seminary, where she was ordained as a Metaphysical Minister and Practitioner in August 2020.
Her reflective nature also found expression through writing. Benita was a prolific writer who shared notes, reflections, and words of wisdom wherever she could. In 2003, she authored The People’s Guide to Uncluttered Living, a testament to her thoughtful voice and her desire to help others find clarity and purpose.
Benita will be remembered as strong-willed, determined, and resilient, with a discerning mind, a clever spirit, and a quiet depth. Her presence will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Barb Latham; her brother-in-law, Frank Latham; her nieces, Jade and August; and a host of other relatives and special friends.
Her memory will continue to live on in the lives she touched and in the love she leaves behind.
The family will celebrate Benita’s life at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton Township NJ on September 14, 2026. Details to follow.
